The World of H.G. Wells
Here is a great website on the life and works of H.G. Wells. On the left-hand margin, you will find many of Wells' stories online (including "The Star" and "The Magic Shop.")
You might want to read some of his stories.

Did you know that...
H.G. Wells had a passionate concern for society which led him to join the socialist Fabian Society in London.

I have read both "The Time Machine" and "The War of the Worlds" and I agree with BCaputo that the Time Machine was very concept oriented. I also agree with Josh about how H.G. Wells showed his concern for the state of human society.
I found it ironic that in "The War of the Worlds", the martians colonized and practiced imperialism on Great Britian which itself was number one in imperialism.
